Jubilation
A few things for today. Book Clubbers, we start our new book next Monday, 3/23/09, is this enough time? We could probably delay it a week or so, but I’m excited to read this book. I already started it actually, but I have put it on hold so we can all begin together.
A few days back, I compiled a list of my most anticipated music releases of 2009. It was quite a list, but I left an important one off. Mirah released her latest album on March 10th and I somehow missed it. It is immediately nominated for worst album cover of all time, but the music is great as usual. Maybe I’ll do a post on Mirah eventually, I think you’d like her. Here’s one of her new songs:
When I was a child, I would get stressed out over pointless things (kind of like my daughter Rory is now). One of the things that stressed me out most was music. Not really music itself, but the thought that there is a finite number of melodies. To put it another way, I would get stressed out because I thought there was a limit to new melodies, I thought we would run out of music. I tell you this to set up the following video. You see, I’m not scared anymore. First because I now know that we will never run out of new music and second because of cover songs like this:

Jared is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and a lover of food.
Beth holds a Bachelor's degree in painting and needs to write something else here.
I am SO excited to hear the new Mirah (i know you know that already) and I love htat cover of Cecelia. Simon and Garfunkel couldn’t have done it any better themselves.
Guys, Camera Obscura comes out 4/21.
I just watched the video (because I can’t see any videos at work, even if I try). And I thought you might smile if I told you (Jared) and reminded you (Beth) that when we were in high school Tassi used to change the words to “making bread in the afternoon with Cecilia up in my kitchen”… “I got up to wash my toe when I come back to bread someone’s taken my dough”. I never knew why she did that. Are the real lyrics offensive/inappropriate? Maybe. It doesn’t matter. Tassi’s version was funny. And to this day I cannot hear this song without hearing her alternative lyrics. So maybe that is one more reason not to worry. Mormons can cover your favorite songs and clean up the lyrics to make them slightly different. Oh and just as a counterpoint, NPR actually did a segment on how there are too many bands and we are going to have problems if people continue to join/make bands at the rate they are currently being formed. You might want to google it before you get too comfortable.
